Unsafe abortion is a major cause of maternal mortality and morbidity in developing countries.  Every year around 22 million unsafe abortions are carried out, causing 47 000 women to die and disabling a further 5 million.  These high costs are easily preventable: nearly all deaths from unsafe abortion could be avoided through access to effective and comprehensive sex education, family planning, induced abortion and care for complications following abortion.

This website is for anyone who wants to find out more about our research on the social and economic causes and consequences of unsafe abortion in Zambia, where safe abortion is legal, but services are not accessed by the men and women who need them.
